DUBAI, May 5 (Xinhua) -- UN General Secretary Ban Ki-moon praised efforts by United Arab Emirates (UAE) to cut greenhouse gases and utilize solar power, while visiting one of the world's biggest solar park in the UAE on Monday.

"By harnessing the power of the sun, the UAE is cutting greenhouse gas emissions, generating jobs and laying the foundation for low-carbon economic progress," the secretary said.

Ban was in Abu Dhabi for the two-day climate meeting Abu Dhabi Ascent with over 1,000 official delegates and climate experts from almost all UN member states. The meeting covered topics including the UN climate summit scheduled to take place in New York on September 23.

Ban urged the member states to act fast and fight global warming, warning the attendees "time is running against us."

Operational from March 2013, the Shams park is located in Abu Dhabi's Western region al-Gharbia.

The Shams park, the 100-megawatt plant, is a joint venture between Abu Dhabi's Masdar, France's Total and Abengoa from Spain.
